Family Law
Overview
Separation and the changes that come with it can be stressful and emotional for the adults and children involved. With legal experience and compassion, we help our clients navigate this difficult time. We can assist you with basic and complex issues arising from the breakdown of a marriage or common-law relationship, including:
- Child support and spousal support
- Division of property and debt, including business interests and pensions
- Parenting rights and obligations (custody, parenting time, guardianship, relocation)
- Prenuptial agreements, Cohabitation agreements, and Separation agreements; and
- Family Maintenance Enforcement Program (FMEP) matters
We protect our clients’ interests while working towards a fair settlement. To achieve this, we first pursue resolution out-of-court through negotiation, mediation and collaborative law. However, if negotiation does not resolve the dispute, we are prepared to litigate the issues in the courtroom when necessary. Our experience and expertise ensure that our clients can move forward with their lives with certainty and security.
Brent brought the precedent-setting family appeal in Shih v. Shih, a case which clarified the evidentiary standard for determining which family assets can be excluded from equal division between spouses in a divorce.
Brent is also the former research editor of the British Columbia Family Law Practice manual, published by LexisNexis.
